Best Frozen Foods for Healthy Living

Frozen foods get a bad wrap these days. A lot of people think if something is frozen, then it doesn’t have any nutritional value. While that statement CAN be true for many frozen food items on the market these days, there are still some options that can certainly be incorporated in a healthy diet!

I love using frozen foods to whip up quick, low effort meals! From frozen waffles at breakfast to salmon fish sticks at dinner, many dishes in my home start with frozen ingredients! Here are seven of my favorite frozen foods that I always have stocked in my freezer plus some healthy meal ideas using these foods!

  1. Frozen Protein Waffles

I LOVE frozen waffles because they are so quick and easy! You just pop them in the toaster for a couple minutes and they are ready to go. I like to make them a little more fancy by adding toppings for some extra fiber and fun! Some of my favorite topping combinations are:

  • Frozen berries (thawed) with cool whip

  • Fresh berries with plain Greek yogurt

  • Banana and syrup

  • Fresh apple with cinnamon and walnuts

2. Frozen Cauliflower Rice

No joke, I go through at least two bags of cauliflower rice each week! It is so versatile as a rice alternative, a thickener for smoothies, or in soups for an extra veggie boost. Cauliflower rice is a great way to sneak in extra fiber and nutrients without even tasting it! Some ways I use it in the kitchen are:

  • Add to smoothies for a creamier texture

  • Steam in the bag and mix together with cooked rice for an extra fiber boost

  • Chicken fried cauliflower rice dinner

  • Chipotle bowls with cauliflower rice, beans, chicken, cheese, corn, salsa, and guac!

3. Frozen Turkey Meatballs

Frozen turkey meatballs are a super simple and quick meal option for days you don’t want to spend time cooking. You can either microwave the meatballs or warm them up on the stove or crockpot with a sauce. These are great because they are already cooked so you literally just need to reheat them, plus they are a great source of protein! Just pair them with some healthy fats and fiber and you have a delicious, simple, and health meal! My favorite frozen turkey meatball meals are:

  • Spaghetti and meatballs

  • Greek turkey meatball pitas with Tzatziki sauce

  • Crockpot turkey meatballs with BBQ sauce (pot luck favorite)

  • Turkey meatball subs with mozzarella cheese

This frozen food item is a popular one these days and with reason! Cauliflower pizza crust is a great healthier alternative to regular frozen pizza. I love that they sell just the crust so you can add your favorite healthy toppings and sauces at home. Here are some of my recent cauliflower pizza crust combinations:

  • Hawaiian Pizza: canadian bacon, pineapple, black olives, mozzarella cheese

  • BBQ Chicken Pizza: leftover cooked chicken breast, BBQ sauce, shredded cheddar cheese

  • Veggie Pizza: fresh tomato, artichoke, basil, mozzarella cheese

5. Frozen Fish

Frozen fish is a great source of protein, healthy fats, and omega 3’s. Many stores sell them in individually wrapped filets so you can grab as many as you need for the meal you’re cooking. You can either put them in the fridge to defrost overnight or if you’re lazy like me, you can set the bag of tilapia or salmon in the sink and run hot water over it until it thaws. Either way, frozen fish is a great healthy option to keep in your freezer for days you want to whip up a quick nutritious meal. The filets do require cooking, but on the stove or in the air fryer, it will take you less than 10 minutes to cook up a couple filets. Meal ideas for how to cook frozen fish:

6. Frozen Veggie Fried Rice

This frozen veggie fried rice is a great option for a busy weeknight dinner. Pair it with your favorite protein or your leftover chicken from dinner the night before. I like to add coconut aminos or low sodium soy sauce with a few seasonings to make the dish more flavorful, but you can certainly just steam the bag in the microwave and eat it as is. Here are some ideas for how to use this frozen food item for dinner:

  • Frozen veggie fried rice with salmon, chicken, shrimp, or steak

  • Frozen veggie fried rice, mix in frozen cauliflower rice and coconut aminos

I love these frozen sweet potato slices for a quick breakfast in the mornings. They can be used as a toast alternative for some extra fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Just pop one or two in the toaster and add your favorite toppings. Some of my favorite frozen sweet potato slices are:

  • Plain Greek yogurt, nut butter, and cinnamon

  • Mashed avocado, boiled egg, Everything But the Bagel Seasoning, and red chili pepper flakes

  • Peanut butter, banana, chia seeds
