Sonic Ocean Water

Craving that sweet, tropical sip of Sonic’s Ocean Water without leaving the house? This nostalgic blue drink is a cult favorite for a reason—it’s refreshing, slightly coconutty, and has just the right amount of fizz. But instead of hitting the drive-thru, let’s make it at home! This easy copykat recipe uses just three ingredients and takes less than five minutes to whip up.

Not only is it more affordable than the real deal, but you can also customize it to your taste and even make a big batch for summer parties. Whether you’re making it for the kids, for yourself, or for a beach-themed get-together, this homemade Sonic Ocean Water is sure to make waves.

Ingredients

  • 1–2 tablespoons coconut syrup (regular or sugar free – adjust to taste)
  • 1/12 teaspoon blue spirulina powder (or 1–3 drops of blue food coloring)
  • 12 ounces lemon-lime soda (like Sprite or 7UP, chilled)
  • Ice cubes
  • OPTIONAL GARNISHES: maraschino cherry, gummy shark, and/or a peach ring gummy candy

Instructions

  1. Add the coconut syrup
Pour 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut syrup into a small cup.
  2. Add blue color
Add the blue spirulina powder or food coloring. Whisk or stir well to fully dissolve and distribute the vibrant blue color.
  3. Assemble the drink
In a glass or mason jar, add ice cubes and the blue coconut syrup. Slowly pour in the chilled lemon-lime soda and gently stir to combine.
  4. Serve and garnish
Pop in a fun straw, and add a fun garnish. I like to add a peach ring gummy around the straw to look like a pool floatie and a gummy shark for added summer fun.

How to Make a Large Batch for a Party

Hosting a summer gathering or themed party? This Sonic Ocean Water is a guaranteed hit—and it’s super easy to scale up! To make a large batch, you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup of coconut syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon of blue spirulina powder (or about 8-10 drops of blue food coloring) – add more or less to get your desired blue color
  • 2 liters of lemon-lime soda
  • Ice cubes – add right before serving

In a large pitcher or drink dispenser, combine the coconut syrup, blue spirulina powder (or blue food coloring) and lemon lime soda. Stir gently to combine, then refrigerate until ready to serve. Just before guests arrive, add ice or keep it chilled in a bucket with ice underneath the dispenser. You can also prep the syrup and color mixture ahead of time and add the soda right before serving to keep the bubbles fresh and fizzy.

Tips & Variations

  • Make it a slush: Blend the drink with ice for a Sonic-style Ocean Water slushie.
  • Add a citrus twist: Drop in a wedge of lemon or lime for extra zing. I also like using packets of True Lime or True Lemon!
  • Make it for a crowd: To serve a group, multiply the recipe and mix it up in a large pitcher—perfect for summer BBQs and poolside sips.
  • Coconut syrup options: Torani, Monin, or homemade coconut syrup all work great. Some stores have coconut puree in the drinks and mixers aisle, and that would work well too.
  • Make it sugar free: Use a sugar free coconut syrup and a zero sugar/diet lemon lime soda option.
  • Optional garnishes: Get creative with your ocean water toppings: maraschino cherries, gummy sharks, peach ring gummies, Nerds candies, coconut flakes, gummy octopus candies, edible glitter, etc!
  • Use a flavored drink enhancer: Instead of using a coconut syrup, add coconut flavor using a Coconut Flavored Drink Enhancer!

Why Is It Called Ocean Water?

Despite its name, Sonic Ocean Water doesn’t actually taste like the ocean (thank goodness!). The name comes from its bright blue color and the way it sparkles—just like tropical ocean water. The real star flavor is coconut, which gives the drink its beachy, vacation-vibes twist.

Final Thoughts

This homemade Sonic Ocean Water is fun, easy, and totally customizable. It’s a great drink to make with kids or serve at themed parties. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing drink to sip on by the pool or just looking for a fun and fizzy treat, this copykat recipe hits the spot.

Now you can bring a bit of Sonic magic to your own kitchen—no drive-thru required.
