Dunkin’ Dunkalatte

One of the most popular drinks on the Dunkin’ Fall menu this year is the Dunkalatte. It’s a latte with espresso and coffee flavored milk! Yes, that’s it! It is such a simple drink and so easy to make at home!

This recipe will teach you exactly how to make it at home so you can save your money this fall, or for when you want to make it once the drink is out of season in stores.

Ingredients You’ll Need To Make a Dunkin’ Dunkalatte

  • ESPRESSO: Espresso is the star of the show with this recipe. Without espresso, you cannot make a latte, or in this case, a Dunkalatte. Whether you have an espresso machine or not, I got you covered, See my post on 5 Ways To Make Espresso At Home for how you can make espresso for this drink and any other espresso based beverages!
  • COFFEE MILK: Coffee milk is simply coffee flavored milk. Similar to strawberry milk or chocolate milk, they sell coffee flavored milk. You can find it in the dairy section of some regular grocery stores, in cartons at Asian grocery stores, or online on Amazon.
  • ICE: If you want the iced version of this Dunkalatte, you will need ice. For a hot Dunkalatte, no ice is needed.

That’s it! Two ingredients for a hot Dunkalatte or three ingredients for an iced version! Note you can add optional toppings like whipped cream, a dark chocolate covered espresso bean, cocoa powder, or cold foam to make the drink a bit more fun!

Since espresso is a main component of this drink, let’s talk about the different ways you can make great espresso at home.

How To Make Espresso At Home

There are five ways to make espresso at home:

  • Instant Espresso Powder
  • Nespresso Machine
  • Moka Pot
  • Aeropress
  • Espresso Machine

See my 5 Ways To Make Espresso At Home blog post for step by step instructions of each espresso making method!

Once you establish which method you want to use for making espresso, then we can decide on exactly which coffee products to buy!

What’s The Best Coffee to Use For Espresso?

If you are using an espresso machine, a Moka Pot, or an Aeropress to make espresso, these are my recommended coffees:

If you are using a Nespresso machine, these are my recommended espresso pods:

If you are using instant espresso, these are my recommended espresso powders:

Note for instant espresso, I like to follow the following ratios:

  • Single shot: 1/4 tablespoon instant espresso + 1.25 ounces warm water
  • Double shot: 1/2 tablespoon instant espresso + 2.5 ounces warm water
  • Triple shot: 3/4 tablespoon instant espresso + 3.75 ounces warm water
  • Quad shot: 1 tablespoon instant espresso + 5 ounces warm water

What is a “Shot” of Espresso?

A common espresso term you’ll see a lot is a “shot” of espresso. When you brew espresso using an espresso machine, the liquid that comes out of the machine is considered a shot, since the machine pushes out the liquid at high pressure.

  • A single shot or one shot of espresso is roughly 1.25 ounces of liquid.
  • A double shot is roughly 2.5 ounces of liquid.
  • A triple shot is roughly 3.75 ounces of liquid.
  • A quad shot is roughly 5 ounces of liquid.

It doesn’t matter which espresso making method you use. Choose one method to make your shots and you’re one step closer to enjoying your at home Dunkalatte!

How To Steam Milk For a Hot Dunkalatte

All hot lattes require steamed milk as one of the ingredients. To steam milk at home, you have a few options:

  1. Steam Wand: If you have an espresso machine with a steam wand attached to it, watch this Milk Steaming Video Tutorial for how to steam milk! You simply add milk to a milk frothing pitcher, insert the tip of the steam wand into the milk, and create air bubbles, heat and texture to create perfect, velvety steamed milk at home!
  2. Electric Milk Frother: Add your milk to an electric milk frother, and select the hot setting. The milk frother will heat the milk as well as create a thick and foamy texture. The texture will be a little different than a typical steam wand, but it’s very similar and pleasant, and a great option if you don’t have an espresso machine with a steam wand.
  3. Handheld Milk Frother: Add cold milk to a large coffee mug and place the mug in the microwave for 60 seconds. Alternatively, you can heat up milk in a pot on the stove until warm, just make sure to constantly stir it so it doesn’t burn. Once your milk is warm, insert a handheld milk frother into the warm milk. Froth the mixture until the milk doubles in size and becomes bubbly and frothy, and you have steamed milk for your hot latte!

Note, for an iced Dunkalatte, you do not need to warm or steam the milk. Simply skip this step, and use cold coffee milk straight from the fridge.

We have our espresso, and our coffee milk (steamed for a hot Dunkalatte, cold for an iced Dunkalatte), now let’s put it all together!

How To Make an Iced Dunkalatte At Home

  • Brew a double shot (or triple shot, or quad shot) of espresso using an espresso machine, Nespresso machine, Moka pot, Aeropress or instant espresso powder.
  • Add your chilled coffee milk over the top of the espresso, and add ice to fill the cup.
  • Give the drink a stir to combine and chill the entire drink, and enjoy your homemade iced Dunkalatte!
  • Optional: top with whipped cream and a dark chocolate covered espresso bean

  • Brew a double shot (or triple shot, or quad shot) of espresso using an espresso machine, Nespresso machine, Moka pot, Aeropress or instant espresso powder.
  • Pour cold coffee milk into a milk frothing pitcher and steam using a steam wand. You could also froth the milk inside an aerroccino, or microwave the coffee milk for 60 seconds in the microwave and froth with a handheld milk frother until thick and frothy.
  • Pour the steamed/frothed coffee milk over the espresso, and enjoy your homemade hot Dunkalatte!
  • Optional: top with whipped cream and a dark chocolate covered espresso bean

How To Make a Lower Sugar/Lower Calorie Dunkalatte?

I don’t know of any sugar free or low sugar coffee milks that you can buy, BUT you can always make your own coffee flavored milk by combining a coffee flavored syrup or extract with regular milk. Torani has a Sugar Free Coffee Syrup that would go great in this recipe! Combine 1 tablespoon of coffee syrup for every 8 ounces of milk to get your own coffee milk.

You could also use coffee extract and combine that with milk. This would not give the drink any sweetness, it’ll just give you unsweetened coffee milk. So feel free to add Splenda or your preferred sweetener of choice to make the Dunkalatte sweeter!

High Protein Dunkalatte

For a high protein Dunkalatte, combine espresso and a coffee flavored protein milk or protein shake like:

How Can I Make This A Blended Coffee?

For a blended Dunkalatte, just combine the espresso, coffee milk, and ice in a blender with 1/4 teaspoon of xanthan gum, and blend until smooth!

Easy peasy lemon squeezy! This Hot or Iced Dunkalatte is so simple to recreate at home, all you need is espresso and coffee milk, (and ice for an iced version), and you can make your own Dunkalatte at home every single day.

Followed the directions, but it wasn’t creamy like a dunkalatte from Dunkin.
