Dutch Bros Hazelnut Truffle Mocha

Why spend extra cash at the coffee shop when you can recreate this cozy and delicious Dutch Bros Hazelnut Truffle Mocha at home? This recipe is your ticket to indulgence without the splurge. With layers of rich espresso, creamy chocolate milk, and the nutty sweetness of hazelnut, all topped with a classic Dutch Bros Soft Top and caramel drizzle, you’ll be savoring every sip.

Whether you like it hot or iced, this DIY version tastes just as amazing while keeping your wallet happy. Let’s get brewing!

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 tablespoons Torani Hazelnut Syrup (Note: Dutch Bros uses Torani Hazelnut Syrup, not the classic hazelnut syrup!)
  • 2 shots espresso ~2 ounces (See my 5 Ways to Make Espresso at Home blog post for all the different ways you can make espresso at home).
  • 6-8 ounces chocolate milk – For a protein boost, use a chocolate protein milk or shake!
  • Ice cubes (omit for a hot mocha)
  • 1-2 ounces Rich’s On Top Soft Whip – this is the exact same product Dutch Bros uses for their Soft Top. These cartons arrive frozen so you store in the freezer, and then thaw one carton at a time. These cartons are pricey, so I do have a homemade soft top recipe below.
  • Torani Caramel Sauce, for topping – Dutch Bros uses the Torani Caramel Sauce, but feel free to use any brand you’d like!

How to Make a Dutch Bros Hazelnut Truffle Mocha

  1. Add the hazelnut syrup to a glass or mug, and then brew the espresso shots directly over the syrup, using your preferred espresso making method.
  2. Pour in the chocolate milk, and ice, leaving room for the soft top. Stir with a spoon or straw until the cup feels cold to the touch. For a hot mocha, steam the chocolate milk before adding it to the espresso and syrup mixture, and then omit the ice.
  3. Pour the Soft Whip over the iced mocha, and top with a drizzle of caramel sauce.
    • For a homemade soft top: In a separate smaller cup, combine the vanilla syrup, 2% milk, and heavy cream. Froth the mixture together using a handheld milk frother until thick (15-30 seconds), and then pour it over the iced mocha and top with caramel sauce.

Homemade Soft Top

  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla Syrup
  • 2 tablespoon 2% milk
  • 3 tablespoon heavy cream

Combine all ingredients in a small cup, and froth with a handheld milk frother until thcik and creamy (about 30 seconds).

That’s it! With a cup and a handheld milk frother, you can create the most perfect, creamy, fluffy textured Dutch Bros Soft Top at home.

Dutch Bros Ratios:

I personally prefer a less creamy, more coffee forward, less sweet version of this drink, so the recipe I provide is a bit different than the typical Dutch Bros ratios. If you’re wanting to most accurately replicate the Dutch Bros Hazelnut Truffle Mocha at home, follow these ratios!

Dairy Free Version

For a dairy free Dutch Bros Hazelnut Truffle Mocha:

  • Use a dairy free chocolate milk (like soy, oat, almond or coconut)
  • Swap the 2% milk for barista style oat milk and the heavy cream for soy milk to make a dairy free homemade soft top
  • Use a dairy free caramel sauce for the drizzle on top

I love this drink but usually get it half sweet. How do you adjust measurements for half sweet?

Hi Shani!! I’m so glad you like this drink too, it’s a good one 🙂 To make it half sweet, simply use half the amount of sweetener! In the Dutch Bros ratios table, you’ll see each size gets 1 ounce of syrup, so for a half sweet drink, only use 1/2 ounce of hazelnut syrup! Or as you see on the recipe card, I recommend 1-2 tablespoons, so you could try 1/2-1 tbsp but for an official half sweet at dutch, you’d do 1/2 ounce.
