Homemade French Vanilla Creamer

French vanilla creamer has a reputation for being extra smooth, rich, and almost custard-like — and if you’ve ever wondered why it tastes different than regular vanilla, you’re not imagining it. French vanilla isn’t just “more vanilla.” It’s inspired by vanilla custard or vanilla ice cream, which means the flavor is warmer, rounder, and more indulgent.

This homemade French vanilla creamer recreates that classic coffee shop flavor using my favorite blender method with sweetened condensed milk and half & half. It’s thick, creamy, and perfectly balanced — with that unmistakable French vanilla vibe — but made with simple ingredients you probably already have at home.

Once you try this version, you’ll understand why French vanilla has been a coffee favorite for so long.

What Makes French Vanilla Different?

Traditional French vanilla flavor is based on vanilla custard, not plain vanilla. That custard-style flavor usually comes from:

  • Rich vanilla (often vanilla bean)
  • A slightly creamy, almost buttery note
  • Soft warmth (not sharp or overly sweet)

Since we’re not cooking eggs for a coffee creamer (thankfully), we’re recreating that effect with:

  • Vanilla extract + vanilla bean paste
  • A tiny hint of almond extract
  • A pinch of salt to round everything out

The result tastes like vanilla ice cream melted into your coffee — smooth, cozy, and not artificial.

Homemade French Vanilla Creamer

Makes ~28 ounces

Ingredients

  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 14 ounces half & half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla bean paste
  • ⅛ teaspoon almond extract
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender.
  2. Blend for 20–30 seconds, until smooth and fully combined.
  3. Taste and adjust if needed — more vanilla bean paste for stronger flavor or a tiny pinch more salt to make the vanilla pop.
  4. Pour into a jar or airtight container.
  5. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Shake well before each use.

Variations & Substitutions

Extra Creamy:
Use heavy cream instead of half & half

No Vanilla Bean Paste:
Use an additional ½-1 teaspoon vanilla extract

JUST Vanilla, not French Vanilla Creamer:
Omit the almond extract and the vanilla bean paste entirely, and use 1/2-1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Dairy-Free:
Use dairy-free sweetened condensed milk + dairy-free half & half

Sugar-Free:
Use sugar-free sweetened condensed milk

Even More “Buttery Custard” Vibes (Optional):
Add 1–2 drops butter extract (optional, but very French vanilla-coded)

Will It Separate?

No major separation should happen, but because this is made with real dairy, a quick shake before using is normal — just like store-bought creamers. The texture stays smooth and pourable in the fridge.

How to Use French Vanilla Creamer

  • Iced or hot coffees
  • Iced or hot teas
  • Cold brew
  • Iced americanos (I like to add just a splash)
  • Matcha (yes, it works beautifully)

Final Thoughts

This homemade French vanilla creamer is rich, cozy, and nostalgic in the best way — the kind of flavor that makes your morning coffee feel special without leaving the house. It’s simple, reliable, and tastes like the French vanilla you actually want, not the artificial version you’re used to.

If French vanilla is your go-to order, this is a recipe you’ll want to keep stocked at all times.

This homemade vanilla creamer is everything. Thick, creamy, slightly frothy, and made with ingredients I actually trust—no oils or gross aftertaste like store-bought creamers! It feels like a treat, especially at night, and the flavor is incredible. I love that you can adjust the sweetness with vanilla, and I always make extra to share with family.
