Pumpkin Spice Latte Puppy Chow

Let’s get the most important thing out of the way…some call it Puppy Chow, others call it Muddy Buddies. I’m team Puppy Chow since that’s what I’ve called it my whole life, but if you call it Muddy Buddies, cool beans! Keep doing you while I’ll keep doing me!

The other day I saw someone make Puppy Chow on Instagram and instantly I thought it would be fun to do a fall version, and then I thought, “OMG, how about a PSL version!” PSL stands for Pumpkin Spice Latte, in case you didn’t know.

Let me tell you, this Pumpkin Spice Latte Puppy Chow will not disappoint! It has the same sweet, peanut buttery flavor you know and love in traditional Puppy Chow but with a cozy fall twist! It’s perfect for all your upcoming fall gatherings or for a cozy movie night in with the fam. Regardless of how you plan to enjoy this fun and delish treat, I promise it’ll be your new favorite way to enjoy Puppy Chow (or Muddy Buddies) this year and years to come.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Puppy Chow Ingredients

  • CINNAMON CHEX CEREAL: I love the additional cinnamon flavor of the cinnamon Chex cereal in this recipe, but you could use whatever Chex cereal flavor or rice cereal brand you love most!
  • CREAMY PEANUT BUTTER: I wanted to keep the traditional Puppy Chow flavors as much as possible so I use creamy peanut butter in this PSL Puppy Chow Recipe. However, you can use any nut or seed butter you prefer, OR use cookie butter instead!
  • PUMPKIN SPICE BAKING CHIPS: These pumpkin spice baking chips are delicious! They have a sweet pumpkin spiced flavor that pairs very nicely with the peanut butter in this recipe. You could swap the pumpkin spice baking chips with semi-sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, or orange candy melts for a fun orange vibe. For a lower sugar option, opt for the Lily’s No Sugar Added Pumpkin Spice Baking Chips.
  • POWDERED SUGAR: The powdered sugar is what you coat your Chex cereal in at the end to get that fabulous Puppy Chow look and taste. Opt for a sugar free powdered sugar or homemade option if you prefer.
  • INSTANT ESPRESSO POWDER: This ingredient is completely optional but it will take your Puppy Chow from Pumpkin Spice to Pumpkin Spice Latte! The addition of the instant espresso powder will add caffeine to the Puppy Chow so I recommend skipping this if you’re planning on letting your kiddos indulge in the Puppy Chow, or if you’re someone who is sensitive to caffeine, or someone who is trying to be mindful of caffeine intake.
  • PUMPKIN PIE SPICE: For an extra yummy pumpkin spice touch, I like to add some pumpkin pie spice to the recipe. You can skip it entirely, or substitue for cinnamon instead.
  • OPTIONAL ADD-INS: I love to add fun add-ins like pumpkin spice chocolate covered pretzels, m&ms, candy corn, salted peanuts, etc to my Puppy Chow. This can help add extra flavor, color, and texture to the Puppy Chow, making it a perfect dessert to bring for potlucks, parties, or movie nights!

How To Make Pumpkin Spice Latte Puppy Chow

  1. Combine Pumpkin Spice Baking Chips and Peanut Butter in a microwave safe bowl, and microwave in 30 second intervals until melted, stirring between each 30 second interval. Once melted, add in the instant espresso powder (optional), and stir to combine.
  2. Add the Chex cereal to a large mixing bowl, and then pour the melted chocolate and peanut butter mixture over the cereal. Mix gently with a spoon or spatula until all the cereal is fully coated.
  3. Place the entire bowl of coated cereal into the refrigerator to cool for 10-15 minutes. You want the cereal mixture to cool before adding the powdered sugar that way the powdered sugar doesn’t dissolve right into the melted chocolate mixture, but rather coats the outside of the cereal.
  4. Once the coated cereal is slightly chilled, add the cereal to a Ziploc bag along with the powdered sugar and pumpkin pie spice. Seal the bag, leaving air inside the bag, and then shake until all the cereal is generously coated with the powdered sugar.
  5. Pour the Pumpkin Spice Latte Puppy Chow back into your large bowl, and add your optional add-ins like: pumpkin spice chocolate covered pretzels, m&ms, candy corn, salted peanuts, etc.
  6. Toss to combine and enjoy!
  7. Note: Store the Puppy Chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week (or in the freezer for up to 2 months)
