White Chocolate Pistachio Puppy Chow

Starbucks Pistachio drinks recently launched and I have been enjoying all the pistachio flavored things like my Homemade Pistachio Syrup, and my Starbucks Pistachio Cream Cold Brew recipe. I was brainstorming pistachio coffee flavor combos and thought of a white chocolate pistachio mocha, but then thought, “What if I make that into a puppy chow dessert?” Thus, this White Chocolate Pistachio Puppy Chow recipe was born!

This White Chocolate Pistachio Puppy Chow is sweet and salty, nutty and chocolatey, and comes together in under 20 minutes! Make a batch for a friends and family gathering, or simply make a bowl for yourself to enjoy this weekend, no judgement here! Let’s dive into the ingredients you’ll need!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

Please note, full measurements are listed on the recipe card at the bottom of the recipe. Scroll to the end, or click the JUMP TO RECIPE button at the top of the page.

Pistachio Butter: The main key pistachio flavor in this recipe comes from a sweet and creamy pistachio butter. I used a jar from the store, but you could make your own by grinding up pistachios into a paste.

White Chocolate: I like using the Ghirardelli White Chocolate Bars for this recipe since they melt super well, and give the dessert a deliciously sweet white chocolate flavor!

Rice Chex Cereal: Chex cereal is traditional for any puppy chow (or muddy buddies) recipe! It maintains a nice crunch even when coated with the other ingredients, but feel free to use any cereal you feel would go well with this recipe!

Roasted & Salted Shelled Pistachios: I love adding pistachios into the mix for even more pistachio flavor and an additional texture in this recipe! Using roasted and salted will give you the best salty and nutty flavor!

Brown Butter Seasoning: I add this seasoning to the top of all my pistachio coffee recipes for an added sweet and salty flavor that pairs so nicely with pistachio! This ingredient elevates this dessert with a perfect buttery flavor, but you could also combine butter powder, brown sugar, and salt if you’d rather make your own homemade version!

Powdered Sugar: Every traditional puppy chow recipe includes a generous coating of powdered sugar! Feel free to use a sugar free option to lower the overall sugar!

Add-Ins: I love how customizable puppy chow is! You can add any of your favorite add-ins to make this dessert your own! Some options I like and recommend for this recipe include: pretzels, mini dark chocolate chips, roasted and salted pistachios, or chocolate covered espresso beans.

Now that we have the ingredients, grab your spatula, the biggest bowl you own, and a gallon size freezer bag so we can begin!

How To Make White Chocolate Pistachio Puppy Chow

  1. Add white chocolate to a microwave safe bowl, and microwave for 30 second intervals until the chocolate is fully melted, stirring between each interval.
  2. Combine the pistachio butter and melted white chocolate together, and stir until combined.
  3. Add Chex cereal to a large bowl, and use a rubber spatula to scoop the pistachio-white chocolate mixture over the top of the cereal. Stir until the cereal is fully coated.
  4. Add salted and roasted shelled pistachios to the coated cereal, along with the Brown Butter Seasoning, and mix until fully combined and coated.
  5. Pour the entire mixture into a gallon size freezer bag, and add in 1/3 cup of the powdered sugar. Seal the bag closed, leaving some air in the bag, and shake until the mixture is fully coated. Add more powdered sugar, 1/3 cup at a time, and repeat until the puppy chow is coated to your liking.
  6. Pour the White Chocolate Pistachio Puppy Chow into a separate clean bowl, and add your preferred add-ins. Mix to combine, and enjoy!
  7. Store the Puppy Chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week (or in the freezer for up to 2 months).

How Can I Make This Lower Sugar?

For a lower sugar White Chocolate Pistachio Puppy Chow:

  • Use sugar free white chocolate chips or white chocolate bark
  • Use an unsweetened pistachio butter
  • Use sugar free powdered sugar
  • Use low sugar add-ins like pretzels, pistachios or sugar free candies.

How Can I Make This Dairy Free?

For a dairy free White Chocolate Pistachio Puppy Chow:

  • Use dairy free white chocolate chips
  • Use dairy free add-ins like sprinkles, pretzels, pistachios, or peanuts.

Substitutions:

Opt for any Chex Cereal you’d like! I think the Chocolate Chex would go great in this recipe, or use Gluten Free Chex Cereal if you’re gluten free!

I like using a white chocolate bar in this recipe, but you could use whatever kind of white chocolate chips, bark, or baking chips you’d like!

How To Store Leftover Puppy Chow

The best way to store puppy chow is in an airtight container on the counter, or at room temperature. The puppy chow will stay good for a week.

You can also freeze leftover puppy chow for up to 2 months in the freezer. When you’re ready to eat, just remove puppy chow from freezer, and place on the counter to thaw a bit and then enjoy.
