This Dutch Bros coffee drink is packed with SIX shots of espresso for an extra energizing cup of Joe! This drink is great for pulling an all-nighter or for working a long 12 hour shift. Ingredients You’ll Need:
Please note, full measurements are listed on the recipe card at the bottom of the recipe. Scroll to the end, or click the JUMP TO RECIPE button at the top of the page.
Irish Cream Syrup: The main flavor and sweetener in this drink is Irish Cream which is a vanilla chocolatey coffee flavor. Dutch Bros uses Torani brand syrups so for an at home 9-1-1, you’d need the Torani Irish Cream Syrup. For a lower sugar option, opt for the Torani Sugar Free Irish Cream Syrup!

Espresso: For this drink you need SIX SHOTS of espresso which means most of the drink’s liquid comes from espresso. I’ll share various espresso making options for you to choose from later in this recipe.
Half & Half: This drink uses half & half as the base, rather than milk. This gives the 9-1-1 it’s delicious creamy and rich texture! You can use any half & half from the grocery store, just know a fat free option will be slightly less rich and creamy but also less calories overall. If you are dairy free, I very much recommend using the Nutpods Dairy Free Half & Half. I’m not dairy free myself, but I love this product! It is so creamy and has much less calories than regular half & half, but absolutely feel free to use whatever you like best!
Ice: If you are making an Iced 9-1-1 you’ll need ice! For a hot version, no ice is needed!
Now that we have our ingredients established, it’s time to choose how you’ll be making your six shots of espresso at home!
How To Make Espresso At Home:
1. Instant Espresso Powder + Water
The first option for espresso at home is instant espresso powder with water. You literally mix together the powder with warm water until the powder is fully dissolved to make your espresso shots, and then just combine those espresso shots with your syrup and half & half!
Since this drink requires 6 shots of espresso, my recommended ratio is:
1.5 tablespoons instant espresso powder + 6 ounces warm water
Some of my favorite instant espresso options for this recipe include:
2. Nespresso Espresso Pods
The second option for making espresso at home is using a Nespresso machine with espresso pods! Note, Nespresso makes regular brewed coffee pods that are either 5.07 ounces or 7.77 ounces and then they also make espresso pods that are either 1.35 ounces or 2.7 ounces.
For this recipe, I recommend you use THREE double shot espresso pods to give you 6 total shots of espresso! The double shot pods are the ones that say 2.7 ounces or “double espresso” on them.
Some of my favorite double espresso options for this drink include:
3. Espresso Machine
The third way you can make espresso at home is using an espresso machine with either coffee beans or coffee grounds. If your machine has a grinder, I recommend using beans so you can grind them fresh, but if your machine does not have a grinder, you’ll need ground coffee.
This method will be the most challenging since it will require a lot of steps and lots of beans to get 6 total shots of espresso, but it is still possible to do at home.

To make a double shot of espresso at home (watch my full video tutorial here):
- Add water to the machine’s water reservoir and turn on the machine.
- Weigh out 18 grams of beans on your coffee scale then add the beans to the hopper.
- Double check you’re using the correct basket inside your portafilter – If grinding beans fresh, use the single wall double shot basket. If using ground coffee, use the double wall double shot basket.
- Screw a dosing funnel onto portafilter and grind the beans until you hear the screeching sound (indicating there’s no beans left in the hopper). You could also program your machine to give you a set amount of grounds each time. See my video HERE on how to program your machine to do this.
- Set the portafilter down flat on the counter, and use an espresso stirrer to stir the grounds. Make sure you get the edges and bottom of the portafilter, and break up any clumps/air pockets in the grounds.
- Give the portafilter a little love tap, and remove the dosing funnel.
- Use a distributor tool to distribute the grounds evenly, then flip the tool over to tamp the grounds. The grounds should be compact enough for water to flow through, too tight and you’ll build up too much pressure.
- Once evenly tamped, lock portafilter into the machine, place a cup underneath the portafilter to catch the espresso and press the DOUBLE shot button.
- Once your extraction is complete, dump the wet grounds into the trash, wipe with a clean cloth, and repeat steps 2-8 for another double shot.
- Once your second extraction is complete, dump the wet grounds into the trash, wipe with a clean cloth, and repeat steps 2-8 for another double shot.
- Once your have your SIX total espresso shots, you can add that to your Irish Cream Syrup and half & half to make a Dutch Bros 9-1-1 at home!

Once you’ve established how you will be making your six shots of espresso, we can begin the recipe!
How To Make an Iced Dutch Bros 9-1-1
- Brew your six shots of espresso using your preferred espresso making method.
- Add Torani Irish Cream Syrup to your cup, and add the espresso shots over the top.
- Add the half and half and give the mixture a stir.
- Fill a separate cup up to the top with ice, and pour the Irish cream-espresso mixture over the ice. Pour the mixture back and forth between the two cups to chill the drink, with the last pour being your serving cup, and enjoy!

How To Make a Hot Dutch Bros 9-1-1
- Brew your six shots of espresso using your preferred espresso making method.
- Add Torani Irish Cream Syrup to your cup, and add the espresso shots over the top.
- Add half & half to a milk frothing pitcher and steam using a steam wand. If you don’t have an espresso machine with a steam wand, you can warm and froth the milk using an aerroccino, or you could warm the milk in a pot/ in the microwave, and froth the warmed half & half with a handheld milk frother until foamy.
- Pour the steamed/frothed half & half over the Irish cream-espresso mixture and enjoy!
How To Steam Milk for a Hot 9-1-1
To steam the half and half, you have a few options:
- Steam Wand: If you have an espresso machine with a steam wand attached to it, watch this Milk Steaming Video Tutorial for how to steam milk! The process is exactly the same with half and half. Add half and half to a milk frothing pitcher, insert the tip of the steam wand into the half and half, and create air bubbles, heat and texture to create perfect, velvety steamed half and half at home!
- Electric Milk Frother: Simply add your half and half to an electric milk frother, and select the hot setting. The milk frother will heat the half and half as well as create a thick and foamy texture. The texture will be a little different than a typical steam wand, but it’s very similar and pleasant, and a great option if you don’t have an espresso machine with a steam wand.
- Handheld Milk Frother: Add cold half and half to a large coffee mug and place the mug in the microwave for 60 seconds. Alternatively, you can heat up half and half in a pot on the stove until warm, just make sure to constantly stir it so it doesn’t burn. Once your half and half is warm, insert a handheld milk frother into the warm half and half. Froth the mixture until the half and half doubles in size and becomes bubbly and frothy, and you have steamed half and half for your Hot Kicker!
Why Half & Half, Instead of Milk?
This is just what Dutch Bros uses in their iced and hot 9-1-1 recipe, but you can absolutely use milk instead of half & half if you prefer a less rich beverage.

How Can I Make This Lower Sugar or Lower Calories?
For a lower sugar, lower calorie Dutch Bros 9-1-1:
- Use a dairy free half & half like the nutpods Dairy Free Half & Half OR use a fat free half & half
- Use the Torani Sugar Free Irish Cream Syrup instead of the regular one or use 1/2-1 ounce of the syrup instead of 2 full ounces
Can I Make This Drink Dairy Free?
Absolutely! I actually prefer a breve with the nutpods Dairy Free Half & Half. It has much fewer calories, and tastes just as creamy as regular half & half!
