You may have seen, Dunkin launched a new drink this spooky season called the Dunkin Potion Macchiato. This “wickedly delicious” drink is a very aesthetic purple colored coffee made from a marshmallow and ube flavored milk and brewed espresso poured over top.
It is actually very simple to make at home, and only requires a few ingredients. Let’s dive into everything you’ll need to make this drink yourself so you can save some money and enjoy this stunning Potion Macchiato at home!

Ingredients Needed To Make a Dunkin Potion Macchiato
- ESPRESSO: Espresso is the star of the show with this recipe. Without espresso, you cannot make a Dunkin Potion Macchiato. Whether you have an espresso machine or not, I got you covered, See my post on 5 Ways To Make Espresso At Home for how you can make espresso for this drink and any other espresso based beverages!
- WHOLE MILK: Dunkin uses whole milk in their recipe, but you can opt for any milk you prefer: almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, coconut milk, skim milk, etc.
- UBE EXTRACT: Ube is a purple yam that originated from the Phillipines. It has a very sweet, nutty flavor and a beautiful vibrant purple color, making it a very popular ingredient in many dessert and drink recipes. I found an ube extract on Amazon that has a delicious ube flavor, but you could also use ube paste or powder if you prefer. The ube will give your drink a beautiful purple color, perfect for spooky season!
- MARSHMALLOW SYRUP: The ube flavoring above does add some flavor to the macchiato, but the main flavoring and sweetener of the drink comes from the Marshmallow Syrup! I personally love the taste of the Torani Toasted Marshmallow Syrup in this recipe. You can opt for a different brand, or for a lower sugar option, use the Torani Sugar Free Toasted Marshmallow Syrup! For marshmallow flavor without a syrup, add some marshmallow fluff/creme to your cup before adding in the milk OR use the nutpods Toasted Marshmallow Creamer for an marshmallow flavor!
- ICE: If you want the iced version of this Dunkin Potion Macchiato, you will need ice. For a hot Potion Macchiato, no ice is needed.
Since espresso is a main component of this drink, let’s talk about the different ways you can make great espresso at home.
How To Make Espresso At Home
There are five ways to make espresso at home:
- Instant Espresso Powder
- Nespresso Machine
- Moka Pot
- Aeropress
- Espresso Machine
See my 5 Ways To Make Espresso At Home blog post for step by step instructions of each espresso making method!
Once you establish which method you want to use for making espresso, then we can decide on exactly which coffee products to buy!
What’s The Best Coffee to Use For Espresso?
If you are using an espresso machine, a Moka Pot, or an Aeropress to make espresso, these are my recommended coffees:
- Laka Java Wahine Blonde Roast Espresso (Use code: katerinafaith for 10% off)
- Press Coffee Twitch Espresso Beans
- Press Coffee Spitball Espresso
- Blue Bottle Coffee Espresso Beans
If you are using a Nespresso machine, these are my recommended espresso pods:
- Orafio (single shot pods)
- Peru Organic (single shot pods)
- Double Espresso Dolce (double shot pods)
- Double Espresso Chairo (double shot pods)
If you are using instant espresso, these are my recommended espresso powders:
- Nescafe Gold Instant Espresso (light/blonde roast)
- Cafe Bustelo Instant Espresso (dark roast)
Note for instant espresso, I like to follow the following ratios:
- Single shot: 1/4 tablespoon instant espresso + 1.25 ounces warm water
- Double shot: 1/2 tablespoon instant espresso + 2.5 ounces warm water
- Triple shot: 3/4 tablespoon instant espresso + 3.75 ounces warm water
- Quad shot: 1 tablespoon instant espresso + 5 ounces warm water
What is a “Shot” of Espresso?
A common espresso term you’ll see a lot is a “shot” of espresso. When you brew espresso using an espresso machine, the liquid that comes out of the machine is considered a shot, since the machine pushes out the liquid at high pressure.
- A single shot or one shot of espresso is roughly 1.25 ounces of liquid.
- A double shot is roughly 2.5 ounces of liquid.
- A triple shot is roughly 3.75 ounces of liquid.
- A quad shot is roughly 5 ounces of liquid.
It doesn’t matter which espresso making method you use. Choose one method to make your shots and you’re one step closer to enjoying your at home Dunkin Potion Macchiato!

How To Steam Milk For a Hot Dunkin Potion Macchiato
All hot macchiatos require steamed milk as one of the ingredients. To steam milk at home, you have a few options:
- Steam Wand: If you have an espresso machine with a steam wand attached to it, watch this Milk Steaming Video Tutorial for how to steam milk! You simply add milk to a milk frothing pitcher, insert the tip of the steam wand into the milk, and create air bubbles, heat and texture to create perfect, velvety steamed milk at home!
- Electric Milk Frother: Add your milk to an electric milk frother, and select the hot setting. The milk frother will heat the milk as well as create a thick and foamy texture. The texture will be a little different than a typical steam wand, but it’s very similar and pleasant, and a great option if you don’t have an espresso machine with a steam wand.
- Handheld Milk Frother: Add cold milk to a large coffee mug and place the mug in the microwave for 60 seconds. Alternatively, you can heat up milk in a pot on the stove until warm, just make sure to constantly stir it so it doesn’t burn. Once your milk is warm, insert a handheld milk frother into the warm milk. Froth the mixture until the milk doubles in size and becomes bubbly and frothy, and you have steamed milk for your hot latte!
Note, for an iced Dunkin Potion Macchiato, you do not need to warm or steam the milk. Simply skip this step, and use cold milk straight from the fridge.
We have our espresso, and our coffee milk (steamed for a hot Potion Macchiato, cold for an iced Potion Macchiato), now let’s put it all together!

How Would I Make This Into a Cold Brew or Iced Coffee?
If you prefer cold brew or iced coffee instead of a macchiato with espresso, know the look of the drink will be slightly different but I recommend following this recipe:
- 1-2 tablespoons Torani Toasted Marshmallow Syrup
- 16 ounces unsweetened black cold brew/iced coffee
- Ice
- 1-3 drops ube extract
- 2 tablespoons 2% milk
- 3 tablespoons heavy cream
To a cup, add HALF of the Torani Toasted Marshmallow Syrup (the other half will be used in the cold foam), the cold brew/iced coffee and ice. In a separate cup, combine the second half of the Torani Toasted Marshmallow Syrup, the ube flavoring, 2% milk, and heavy cream. Froth the mixture together with a handheld milk frother until thick, and pour the cold foam over the cold brew/iced coffee.
Can I Make This Recipe With Regular Brewed Coffee?
No you cannot make a Dunkin Potion Macchiato with regular brewed coffee from a coffee pot/maker because brewed coffee is different than espresso. They taste different, they have different concentrations, and they’re meant to be used differently.
You CAN make a delicious Dunkin Potion Coffee using brewed coffee, it just technically won’t be a macchiato because macchiatos require espresso.
If you just have a coffee pot, no worries, you can use instant espresso powder like I mention above in the “How To Make Espresso At Home section” above, or you can simply swap the espresso for regular brewed coffee, and then just add 2-4 ounces of milk instead of 8 as seen in the recipe.
